Like many little girls, Lena and Maggie LOVE jewelry. While they prefer to wear mine or their grandmothers', they usually have to settle for costume jewelry or pieces that they've made themselves, like these Simple Spring Necklaces.
As I planned some activities for a Spring Themed Preschool Week, I remembered how much my girls loved making their Paper Valentine Necklaces (originally inspired by these Halloween Necklaces by Fireflies and Mud Pies). I thought that paper straw necklaces would be a great project for us to do again.
This time, we made them in bright spring colors, and they turned out so pretty- perfect for spring! In addition to being bright and cheerful, threading the beads provides great fine motor work. You can also work on patterning with your toddler or preschooler!

All you need are paper straws in cheery spring colors (which you can find in any craft store, or in the party supply section of a larger store) and some necklace cord or string. Cut the straws into little bits, about 3/4 of an inch long.
Let your kids start threading! You can encourage them to make patterns, of let them string the colors all willy-nilly. Grabbing hold of the little bits of straw and maneuvering a wiggle lacing cord through them is great for fine motor skills. It requires so much concentration!
Once the string is full, tie a little knot and you've got a perfect necklace for spring! Doesn't it just make you want to go play in the sunshine?
