Gather your materials. You'll need a T-shirt (prewashed), box board or cardboard, a glue stick, heart doilies, fabric paint (get it at a craft store for a much more reasonable price), and a sponge brush or makeup sponge.
Cut the box board so that it fits within the shirt and place it inside, where the heart will be. That will keep the paint from bleeding through to the back of the shirt.
Spread a thin layer of glue stick on your doily, and position the heart on the shirt.
Squirt some paint on a paper plate and let your child dab paint within the 'open' areas of the doily.
Since Maggie ended up accidentally getting paint on the outside edge of her heart, we decided to go ahead and do the whole outside edge of hers. I think that either way looks nice.
When you're done painting, gently pull the doily off to reveal your beautiful heart shape left behind! Don't wait for the glue stick or the paint to dry. Follow the drying and washing instructions on your fabric paint. We let ours dry for 3 days before washing inside-out on a gentle cycle.
