B is for Button

My daughter Maggie takes ballet. Each week I wait in the lobby during her class and chat with the other moms. One of them is a preschool teacher, and she often spends the time browsing Pinterest looking for crafts for her class to do the following week. I've never mentioned that I have a craft blog, but I just listen quietly to her comments as she looks through crafts and activities, trying to get into the mind of a preschool teacher! So while we didn't do preschool with a "letter-of-the-week" style, I know that SO many folks do! This one's for you-- B is for Button!

Prep Your Paper

It has taken me a LONG time, but I've finally learned to do almost all of our crafts and activities on a half-sized sheet of paper. A full sized sheet is almost always too big, and my girls get tired (or bored) before they have a chance to finish whatever they're working on. So begin by cutting your cardstock in half. Sketch a "B". It doesn't have to be perfect-- it's going to be covered up with buttons! If you've not confident in your "B" drawing skills, you can print this template. Go over your pencil outline with a black marker if you'd like-- I thought it looked fine with just pencil.

Buttons Galore

Let your child glue on buttons to cover the "B"! I originally thought that my daughters would be too old (age 5 & almost 7) to be interested in this craft. I was just going to do it myself as a demonstration. But they saw me working and really really really wanted to get in on the action. No one's too old for buttons, I guess!

Lena made the project more challenging by trying to artfully arrange the various sized buttons to fit in the shape just so. She ended up making several layers of buttons, even!

Maggie took a more straightforward approach, and mostly did a single row of medium-sized buttons in perfect "B" shape. She ended up adding a few teeny-tiny buttons to fill in some of the bigger gaps when she'd finished. Either way is fine, and will largely depend on the age of the child.
