Gather Materials For Yarn Wrapped Pinecones
You need (surprise!) yarn and pinecones. Choose something nice and thick for your yarn so that it doesn't disappear in the nooks and crannies of the pinecones. I liked the stripes of this Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick And Quick in crimson and spartan.
For pinecones, you can gather them yourself OR go the easy route and purchase some. If you've gathered them yourself, you'll need to make sure they're free of little critters before you craft with them. Two It Yourself has a nice tutorial on how to get them clean!
You will also need a hot glue gun.
Wrap Your Pinecones
If you're planning to make these into ornaments, start by making a loop from which they can hang. Tie a simple knot.
Hold the loop in place at the top of the pinecone and get the wrapping started for your child. Show them how to tuck the yarn in between the scales as they go around and around.
Different varieties of pinecones have different challenges as you wrap! If the scales are too close together it can be hard to get the yarn in.
Let your child wrap until they're happy. It is great fine motor work to manipulate the yarn while turning the pinecone around and around.
Once you've got a nice collection of wrapped pinecones, plug in a hot glue gun and glue down the top loop and tuck in any loose ends that you have. I waited until all the wrapping was done and my children had gotten down from the table before I started this step so that they wouldn't be tempted to grab the glue gun!
They look so lovely hanging on a Christmas tree!
