The "Little House" series by Laura Ingalls Wilder is a HUGE hit in our house! I read Little House In The Big Woods to Lena when she was around 4, and we've read several of the other books in the series since then. My daughters spend most of their free time in imaginative play, and it is very often centered around the "Little House" universe. Lena is always Mary, Maggie plays Laura, various baby dolls fill in for Carrie, and my husband and I get to be Ma and Pa (hooray).
