Who would imagine that these little wooden circles would be so much fun!? But if you've spent much time with young children, you can probably immediately see their value.  Playing with natural materials is such a treat, and these wooden discs have been a big hit so far with my girls.  Let me tell you how to make these Dyed Wooden Discs, and give you a few ideas of how you may want to use them.

Gather Your Materials

  • wooden discs (I was so pleased with the quality of this brand.  These discs are thick, smooth, and have a nice rounded edge.)
  • small containers
  • vinegar
  • water
  • liquid food coloring (we used primary colors and neon colors)
  • tray and towels for drying

     Dye Your Discs

Add equal parts vinegar and water to your small containers.  Add food coloring.  I used 1/4 c. vinegar and 1/4 c. water, along with 15-20 drops of food coloring.  Put your wooden discs into the liquid and swish them around.

Let the discs soak for about 10-15 minutes.  I found that adding more food coloring helped to increase the intensity of the colors, but soaking the discs for longer didn't help much.

Pull your discs out of the colored liquid and place them on a tray lined with paper towels.

Allow your discs to dry overnight.  After several hours, I noticed the discs were starting to warp a bit.  I flipped them over as they continued to dry and they ended up being mostly flat.   I'm not sure if the flipping helped, or if they would have dried flat anyway.  Either way, the wood is fairly soft and pressing them under heavy books would help them flatten if necessary.
