When I was young, getting to play with my mother's button collection was just about the best thing ever. I'd pour them out and look through all the different colors, shapes, sizes, and textures. I'm sure I'm not the only one with such nice memories-- I know that many mothers and grandmothers have button collections!
So when I saw a package of small heart-shaped buttons at the craft store recently, I knew that Maggie and Lena would enjoy using them for a little project. We came up with this quick and simple Cute As A Button Valentine Craft. While it doesn't use old buttons from a mother's or grandmother's collection, it does have some of that same great button appeal!

Here's What You Need To Make Your Button Valentine Craft

- white cardstock
- scissors
- school glue
- heart-shaped buttons
- red & pink markers (optional)
To Make Your Button Valentine Craft
Cut your cardstock into quarters. This is my favorite sized paper for crafting. It's easy to cut, and your project ends up nice and small, and not too overwhelming for little crafters to finish.
Draw a basic heart in light pencil on the paper (you could also trace a template if you wanted to). Squeeze glue inside the heart.
Place the buttons inside the heart.
In addition to being fun and cute, this craft is great for fine motor skills. Putting the tiny little buttons right where they need to be is a nice challenge. Also, your child will need to think about how to fit the buttons within the heart shape. It's a bit like playing Tetris!
Here is 3-year-old Maggie's heart on the left and mine on the right! There's not a whole lot of difference!
Another fun way to vary this craft is to color in the heart shape before you put the glue and buttons on. Then your heart will have a red background instead of white!
Lena wanted to make her own Valentine button project! So instead of filling the hearts with buttons, she made a nice striped pattern instead.
Cute as a button, right?!
