My girls just love when I set up an Invitation to Create, and I'm guessing that many of your children do, too-- they're some of my most popular posts! We couldn't let Thanksgiving go by without making some turkeys, and with bright colorful feathers and googly eyes, an Invitation seemed like a no-brainer.

This tray was VERY simple to set up. Grab some construction paper and scissors. Cut large and small circles or ovals in brown, black, and white. Next, you need feathers in bright colors. Finally, you need triangles in yellow and orange for beaks, and a few red wobbly snoods (did you know that's what they're called?!). Add some googly eyes and a glue stick and you're ready to go. A divided tray is nice to hold your pieces, but not necessary.
I was able to cut all our pieces in about 20 minutes while distractedly watching TV one evening. One of the things that makes this craft so great is that the natural variation from your shapes (without a template) makes the final outcome look different each time!

Next, invite your child to the table to start creating! You'll build your turkeys on quarter sheets of paper. I like to have some ready in every color (and we usually have leftovers on hand from previous Invitations). I also like to be sure that I'm ready with some scraps of paper and my scissors at the table to cut any special request pieces that the girls may want.
It may be helpful to make a few models for your children to help nudge their creativity along. Little fine motor muscles get a great workout during this project, too!
Your children may make traditional turkeys with fall colors.
Or they may choose to make bright colorful turkeys with a rainbow of feathers!
It's also possible that you'll end up with a turkey of nothing-but-pink feathers.
When you're done, stand back and admire your rafter! (That's a group of turkeys.)
