Bright red and white candy canes look so great against a twinkly Christmas tree! These Yarn Wrapped Candy Canes are a simple and easy craft for your preschoolers or elementary children. Working with yarn is great fine motor work, and these will come together in just a few minutes.

All you need is red and white yarn, tape, and wooden candy cane shapes. You can find them for less than a dollar at a craft store, or they're available here on Amazon. You could also cut out a candy cane shape from sturdy cardboard.
Start by taping one end of red yarn to the bottom of the candy cane, on the back side. Then, start wrapping. Wrap 3 or 4 times, then leave a space where the white will go.
Continue wrapping until you reach the top. Cut the yarn with a fairly long tail, giving yourself plenty of room to tie some knots. Slip the end of the yarn through some loops on the back to keep it secure while you wrap the white yarn.
Using your white yarn, start at the bottom again and wrap, filling in the spaces that you left. You're seeing the back of the candy cane in the picture above. The criss-crosses don't show on the front.
Wrap all the way to the top!
Once you reach the end, cut the yarn and bring it over to meet your red yarn tail. Tie to secure the ends, then make a loop that you'll use to hang the ornament.
Simple as could be!
Older children may enjoy this variation. I held one strand of red yarn and one strand of white yarn together as I wrapped, and just kept the colors lined up to make narrow stripes.
