The girls and I have done marble painting once before, over a year ago. Neither of them remembered it, so they were completely intrigued as I got this process art set up for them. This Marble Painted Pumpkin makes a great craft for fall. You can leave it as a plain pumpkin, or you could add black construction paper shapes to turn the final product into a jack-o'-lantern for Halloween!

For this project, you'll need a printable pumpkin (our is from First Palette) on sturdy cardstock. You'll need orange paint. I mixed up several shades of orange, but in the end you couldn't tell, so I'm not sure that it was worth the trouble. You need some marbles and a box lid. Lena also wanted to make her stem brown, so we also used brown paint and a paint brush, but that's completely optional!
Tape your pumpkin paper to the inside of the box lid.
Paint the stem brown, if you're going to do so.
Next, drizzle several globs of orange paint on the outside edge of the box.
Make sure there is plenty of paint!
Set your marbles loose and begin tipping the box lid back and forth. The marbles may get stuck in the globs of paint at first, but they will eventually become a little more slippery. You can use a spoon or your fingers to encourage them to get rolling.
When Lena started rolling the marbles, I asked her if she thought she would be able to cover the entire pumpkin. She said, "No way!" It was fun to see how quickly it got covered!
We only had a few instances of the marbles jumping out of the box lid after some overly enthusiastic tips. Just remind your children not to tip the lid too far, or to shake it in any way.
We couldn't believe how much Lena was able to cover the whole pumpkin! Set it aside to dry. I found it easier to remove the paper when the paint was still wet. If you let it dry first, some of the paint will have dried as a sort of glue between the box and the paper.
Once the paint has dried, cut the pumpkin out and glue it to a background sheet of construction paper. Again, this would make a lovely jack-o'-lantern if you added some black construction paper shapes as a face!
