This quick and simple paper craft is perfect for Halloween. Or any ole' time.

My girls squealed with delight when they found this Invitation To Create set up for them after their quiet time one day this week. They said, "What are we making?! What are we making?!" I told them that they could make whatever they wanted, but that I had made the tray with monsters in mind. Get ready to Make A Monster!

You just need a few supplies that you likely have on hand: scissors, construction paper, glue, and googly eyes.

Preschool paper monster craft for Halloween

For our other Invitations To Create, I've stuck with just a few simple shapes. For monsters, though, I wanted more choices. I grabbed our scraps of construction paper and cut them into a variety of shapes. You'll need some larger shapes for bodies or heads (ovals, circles, squares, triangles). I also cut some medium shapes like narrow triangles for spikes, regular triangles for horns, skinny rectangles for legs and hair, and circles and rectangles for mouths. Finally, I cut tiny triangles and rectangles for teeth. Add some googly eyes and a glue stick. It helps to have a divided tray to organize the materials, but it certainly isn't necessary.

Elementary paper monster craft for Halloween

Invite your children to create! Provide your children with different colored backgrounds to use, made from quarter sheets of construction paper. I also usually set up nearby with some more paper and scissors. I encourage them to use what's on their tray, but occasionally they will request a particular shape in a particular color, so I like to be ready!

Your children may have plenty of creative juices to get started on their own. My girls often want me to make a few creations for them first to give them some examples. Once we get started, though, they do much better making up their own ideas.

There are endless options. Tons of variety. Make some with bodies and some without. Make some with one giant eye and some with TONS of eyes. Give them hair, or spikes, or horns. My girls kept at this activity for a solid hour and then begged me to keep the trays put together so that they could make more later.
