The Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays! I'm a sucker for America, so I made sure that my girls went overboard on the crafts, learning, and activities leading up to Independence Day. Take a peek at what we did for our Independence Day Theme Preschool Week. At the time we completed these activities, Maggie was a young 3 and Lena was almost 5.

Simple Fine Motor Bracelet Beading
One of my favorite activities to do with the girls is bead lacing. It's great fine motor work, they can practice patterning, and in the end they have a nice bracelet or necklace to dress up with. For Independence Day, I bought a bag of red, white, and blue beads and grabbed some of my favorite lacing cord. This lacing cord is easy for little fingers to thread, and it has just a tiny bit of stretch to go over hands or heads, and it ties easily in a secure knot.
Next I set up a tray with a bowl of beads and a length of cord with a bead tied on one end.
Let your kids lace away!
Lena made LOTS of bracelets and a necklace for everyone in the family.
Patriotic Dancing Rings
I don't really need to encourage the girls to develop their gross motor skills-- they're plenty active on their own! But they do enjoy new things to play or dance with! These Patriotic Dancing Rings have inspired lots and lots of dancing this week.
Stars and Stripes Sensory Bin
I made this really fun Stars and Stripes Sensory Bin for the girls to play with this week. If you've never made a sensory bin for your kiddos before, you should give it a try-- it's an amazing way to give yourself some time to get dinner made!
Magic Firecracker Star Painting
As I thought about a painting activity for us to do this week, I decided that using this magic fizzing paint from Toddler Approved to make firecracker stars would be totally awesome. I was right-- the girls loved it!
Set out your magic fizzing paint in patriotic colors-- we used red, blue, and gold because I had glittery versions of those colors. I also cut out stars from cardstock and set them out along with the paint and brushes.
Let your children paint the stars, then let the fizzy magic begin! Click over to Toddler Approved for the details on this technique.
Field Trip
Check out what your town offers in the way of Fourth of July festivities. You can probably find a festival, parade, or concert to attend with your kids!
Picture Books
I have two great book lists to share with you for an Independence Day theme unit.
The first is a list of Books About the United States. It has some great informative books about the United States and our history.
The second is a list of Patriotic Picture Books put together by No Time For Flashcards. These books have more of a patriotic flare.
Grand Old Flag Mosaic
Our BIG project of the week was a giant American Flag Magazine Mosaic. The girls spent a week working on it, for a little bit of time here and there every day. In the end, they were SO PROUD of the final product!
Red, White, & Blue Snack Mix
Snack mix is a great choice for preschoolers. It usually doesn't involve anything fancy, you can tailor it to your specific needs, and you can adapt it for many different themes or holidays. We whipped up this fun Red, White, & Blue Snack Mix this week.
The girls especially liked making little books about the Fourth of July.
And Maggie liked using dot markers to work on number recognition. She knew more numbers than I realized!
