My girls love crafts with yarn, so I incorporated this cute little Yarn Wrapped Bumblebee Craft during our Bees, Butterflies, and Other Bugs week of home preschool. The girls both enjoyed playing with their bees when they were finished. Well, actually, Lena enjoyed playing with her bee, and Maggie enjoyed playing with MY bee, since she's a bit too young (just turned 3) for this kind of project.
Wrapping yarn like this is a great fine motor project. Your children will develop the little muscles in their hands and fingers, and work on being precise with where they place each wrap. They'll also need to focus on the tension of the yarn and make sure that it isn't so tight that the cardboard warps, but is tight enough to stay in place. Lot's of things going on!
Here's how to make your own Yarn Wrapped Bumblebee Craft.

Gather Your Materials:
- boxboard or thin cardboard
- black yarn and yellow yarn
- googly eyes
- tape
- white school glue
Make Your Bumblebees
Cut your boxboard into a bumblebee shape. Originally, I cut ours into this oval shape, with a stinger. While I was able to make a bee with this shape, Lena had a lot of trouble because of the steep slope of the curve. I ended up cutting Lena a rectangle shape with some 'stair steps' to hold the yarn. It worked beautifully! You can see the shape in main image at the top of the post.
Tape one color of yarn to the back of your boxboard. Start wrapping! Wrap stripes in one color, then tie off the yarn.
Next, tape or tie your other color of yarn and fill in the gaps. Tie the yarn off on the back.
Finally, it's time for the eyes! Use a lot of glue, since much of it will soak into the yarn. Mop up any extra, if necessary.
Add a paper wing. This is a simple tear-drop shape, with the point chopped off. Then we folded them under and glued them to the bees.
Let it all dry and then fly your bees around the room!
