This Creepy Crawly Bug Painting is a quick and easy process painting activity that's perfect to use for a preschool insect theme. We love painting with things other than brushes-- it's just so much fun to see what kind of prints or textures different objects leave behind. As we began our Bees, Butterflies, and Other Bugs Weekly Preschool Theme Week, we started with this bright and colorful painting project. My girls loved it, and I'm sure that your children will, too!

Gather your materials. All you need is white paper or cardstock, paint (this is our favorite) and some insect figurines. We love Safari Toobs-- you can find them on Amazon, but I get ours at the craft store Joann where you can use a 50% off coupon to get a whole tube for around $5. You can also find insect figurines at most toy stores, or even dollar stores.
Prepare some paper plates with different colors of paint and the insects spread around. Invite your child to the work space and let them dip the bugs into the paint and then onto the paper.
My girls loved experimenting to see what kind of prints each of the insects made. Most just made little tiny dots where their buggy legs were, but others left big bold prints.
As the girls worked, we talked about what the different kinds of insects were. I reminded them of the different body parts of insects and about their role in our ecosystem.
My children preferred to paint with the insects they could use without getting their fingers too messy! Even so, I kept some damp washrags nearby so that we could easily wipe their fingers and the bugs to switch colors.
