Invitation to Create: Cupcake Factory

My girls both LOVE cupcakes (who doesn't!?) so I whipped up this easy Cupcake Factory craft for them one afternoon. I love that it only requires construction paper, scissors, and glue-- items that you most likely have on hand. All of the gluing and placing of pieces is great work for little fingers.

Invitation to Create Cupcake Craft for Kids

Using construction paper in a variety of colors, cut your cupcake pieces. The bottom wrapper is a simple trapezoid. The top is a smushed semi-circle, candles are long skinny rectangles, and sprinkles are....sprinkle shaped. Anytime we do a project using construction paper, I save any of the larger scraps in a separate pile. For this activity I just grabbed the whole scrap pile and cut a ton of each shape while my girls worked on another project. I probably spent about 10 minutes cutting, total. If you have a divided plate or tray, it makes for a nice presentation, but it is certainly not necessary.

Throw in a glue stick, and a small stack of quartered cardstock or construction paper for your child to use as a background for their creations.

Invite your child to the table and let them get to work at the cupcake factory!

My girls made cupcake after cupcake after cupcake. They used all kinds of color combinations. Some had candles, some didn't. Some were plain and some were loaded with sprinkles. I was amazed at how long this simple activity kept them engaged and at the table. We had a giant pile of cupcakes when they were finished!

You can also turn these cupcakes into adorable homemade birthday cards! Just build your cupcake on a piece of folded construction paper and write a birthday message on the inside. Super simple and sweet!
