We played Color Cubes as part of our Colors And Rainbows Preschool Theme Week, but it'd be great for any toddler or preschooler at any time!
Don't let the simplicity of this game fool you. It is easy to set up, easy for your kids to play, and a great way for them to get some good exercise. They'll also have loads of fun AND work on their color identification skills! Awesome, right? Here's how to play.

Print out 2 cube templates (like these from First Palette). On one of them, color each square face a different color of the rainbow. On the other, write several gross motor activities that your kiddo can do or is working to learn. There's a list of suggestions at the bottom of the post. Fold up the cubes and tape or glue them together.
Next, take pieces of colored construction paper and spread them around your room. I recommend at least 2 of each color, but if you had a BIG room to work in then you could do more.
Put on some good movin' music and roll the cubes! Call out the action and the color that come up, and let your kids simply go to the color using the action. "Bunny hop to blue," or "forward roll to orange." Keep it moving quickly! Since you have more than one of each color, they can look around and choose which one to go to.
After a while, my girls were tired and out of breath, so they took a little break and rolled the cubes while I played the game. They thought that mom doing forward rolls was absolutely hilarious!
For a game that took less than 10 minutes to set up, this was tons of fun and really got our blood pumping.
Here are some ideas of what you could put on your "action" cube. Choose some that are appropriate for your child. You could even make more than one cube and switch it up during the game!
- march
- run
- skip
- walk backwards
- side shuffle
- long jump
- bunny hop
- crawl
- twirl
- forward roll
- jumping jack
- crab walk
- stomp
- tip toe
- inchworm or snake
- bear crawl (on hands and feet)
- log roll
- gallop
- frog jump
- jump on one foot
