We love all the little farm critters and funny stories in Doreen Cronin's and Betsy Lewin's books!  Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type is one of our all time favorites, and we've enjoyed reading all of the other books in the series as well.  This book, Click, Clack, Boo! is a Halloween installment of the series, and your little ones will enjoy the lightly spooky story, funny illustrations and familiar characters.

One of the main features of the story is repetition of certain sounds.  There is a crunching of leaves, tapping on doors, creaking of old wooden planks, and cheeky duck's quack.

Children's Halloween activity to use with click, clack, boo

For this activity, you'll be making a sound effects box so that your kids can participate in reading the story with you.

contents of sound effects box

Here's what you'll need:
  • fake leaves (or real dried leaves, but be prepared for a mess!)
  • 2 wooden blocks to tap together
  • a Lego or Duplo door or window
  • a rubber duck
  • a box or basket to hold it all

Read the book through once to your child once.  Then give them the box with their sound effects inside.  Talk about what's inside, and how they can use the items to make different sounds in the story.  They'll have to make their own 'creak' and 'quack' but the props make it more fun!

Read the book again, this time pausing at the right times to let your children make the appropriate sounds.

crunching leaves

 They'll crunch-crunch-crunch their leaves.

tapping blocks

They'll tap-tap-tap the wooden blocks.

squeaking door

They'll creak-creak-creak with the door.

quacking duck

They'll quack-quack-quack with their rubber duck.

My daughters wanted to do this activity FIVE TIMES IN A ROW.  Each time they got better at anticipating the sounds that were coming, and got more enthusiastic as they made them.

This sound effects box is a great way to make this story really come alive.   I hope you'll try it with your kids!
